New variety development

New variety development is a major focus and 55 cultivars have been introduced since 1980.  Nine are in cultivation at present (listed in red) and 5 new releases came out of quarantine in April 2019.  The industry runs two annual test plots in Auckland and Canterbury where plants are checked for performance and trueness to type.
