New variety development

New variety development is a major focus and 55 cultivars have been introduced since 1980.  Nine are in cultivation at present (listed in red) and 5 new releases came out of quarantine in April 2019.

The industry runs two annual test plots in Auckland and Canterbury where plants are checked for performance and trueness to type.  Growers should contact runner growers to purchase varieties, with the three main varieties being Camarosa, Ventana, and Monterey currently.
